Things to Know:

GLO After-school at Sherman

GLO HISTORY - In 1982, a group of working parents from West Portal Elementary School who needed safe before and afterschool programming established West Portal C.A.R.E., Inc. The organization’s humble beginnings had less than 50 children enrolled. Over 20 years later, in August 2005, the organization was renamed Growth & Learning Opportunities (GLO). Growth & Learning Opportunities maintains its private non-prot status and community based family services. The organization operates six licensed before and after-school programs located in San Francisco public schools.

UNIQUE QUALITIES ABOUT GLO AT SHERMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - At all the schools GLO is in partnership with, there is a long term commitment from the organization. GLO’s partnership with Sherman School has a goal to bring a quality afterschool program available for all Sherman Elementary School students provided by GLO in the Fall of 2010. For the next three years, GLO will work diligently to create a strong foundation for a sustainable program through joint activities, special events, and partnership between the GLO Director and SFUSD Excel Program Coordinator. The process will ensure a respectful and culturally competent program for children and families as well as viable situation for GLO to provide services. The process and outcomes will provide exciting and unique opportunities for everyone in the school community.

Who will be the GLO Site Director at Sherman?  Beth Guy has worked for GLO for the past 8 years. She started as a teacher assistant at the Alice Fong Yu location. She worked 3 years as the Assistant Site Director at West Portal Elementary and Director of the GLO Summer Program for two years. She is extremely excited to begin her Site Directorship at Sherman Elementary! Beth loves to travel, and tries to make it to Europe at least once a year to visit with her family. On her spare time, Beth coaches club volleyball and enjoys spending time with her friends.

Pick up procedures on Union Street

If you pick your child up on Union Street after school at 1:50pm, please help the process along by following the rules below:

The pick-up zone will now be about 100 feet past the main entrance. Kids will be waiting along the school wall. If you are driving to pick-up, do not double park. If there is no space for you to pull in and pick-up please go around the block. If you do pull in and your child is not yet outside, please go around the block so another parent can pull in.

After pulling in to pick-up your child do not check their homework or talk to other parents. Seat belt your child and leave.

If you walk to pick-up your child and wish to talk to other parents after picking up, please move to an uncongested area of the sidewalk.

We have had complaints from MUNI about double parking and our local police officer has warned us as well. Following the above process will help ensure that all of our children are picked up in the fastest and safest manner.

We apologize for any inconvenience that circling around the block may cause but that is the price we pay for having our wonderful school on such a busy city street.

Other Safety Tips:

Please do not jaywalk with your children across the street.  Please the street at the proper crosswalks.

Please drop off your children at the curb.

If you are walking your child(ren) into the school, please do so via the Union Street entrance.  Please avoid walking through the Green Street parking lots as not safe with cars driving in and out of those lots.

Thank you!
