The First Annual Shark Run was a great success!! We raised over $5,000 with over $500 in t-shirt sales! Thanks to Sydney Takemoto for her great t-shirt design.
The winner of the Shark Hat is Adam Lichtmacher, a 4th grader in Mrs. Acquarelli’s class. The Kindergarteners, by running the most laps (321 total) have won themselves a Popsicle party!! Ms. Dominguez’ class ran 139 laps and Ms. Lau’s class ran 182 laps.
Special thanks to the following making this event happen: Christine Colon, Pam Low, Hillary Polednik, Leila Langlois, Cathy Jordan, Jeff Jordan, Melissa Mountain, Erica Hunt, Cece Kaufman, Jon Lichtmacher, Linda Shaffer, Crystal Brown, Susanne Shibley, Stefanie Takemoto, George Toy, Courtney Damkroger, Derek Brown, Jenni Vazquez, Joe Vazquez, Marci Davis, Marc Andrews, Bonita Andrews, Justine Hewitt, Stephanie Zeppa, Kim Hoffland, Renee Ritchey Syar, Roger Hansen, Kim Fiscus, Patty Myers, Alan Adelman, Sara our Principal and Coach Alex.
Reminder: All pledge payments are due by May 20th. Please put your payments in an envelope, indicate that they are for the Sherman Fun Run, and drop them in the PTA box in the office. You may also send the envelope to school in your child’s homework folder. As soon as we have calculated the grand total raised, we’ll let everyone know.
GREAT NEWS!! We just received a grant from the Dean Witter Foundation for $50,000 to continue our balanced literacy professional development with 3 other schools that are also implementing balanced literacy — El Dorado, Hillcrest, and Monroe. All of the great work that our teachers have been doing has not gone unnoticed by funders. Funders come in and are struck by our students’ and our teachers’ passion for learning and the kids love for reading.

NEEDED!!
Used Kids’ Books for the Annual Summer Reading Book Swap
Please bring your used children’s books to school for our annual Summer Reading Book Swap on Friday, May 20th. The sooner you can get the books to school, the better, so they can be sorted and organized. Leave the books in the office, marked for the library, or bring them directly to the library.
Lost and Found Cleanup
The end of the school year is just weeks away, so please take the time to check the Lost & Found area (near the Girls’ Bathroom at the far side of the Cafeteria). There you will find literally hundreds of items – everything from boys’ and girls’ jackets, hoodies, T-shirts, parkas, and sweaters, to lunchboxes, backpacks, water bottles, hats and caps, books, and even a small plastic shark. Hopefully you will find something that belongs to your child. At the end of the school year, most of these items, if unclaimed, will be donated to charity.
To make things easier, the items will be moved to the hallway outside the Auditorium the last week of school, when both the Kindergarten and 5th Grade classes will hold their graduations, and other fun events will take place. The last day of school features a free marketplace, where you can take anything you like. Thanks in advance for checking out these articles. To make things easier next year, please clearly label your child’s outerwear. Sara and Agnes know all the students, so it won’t be difficult to find the owner if something is lost.
The Art Room Needs Your Help
Interested in helping to mount and hang artwork in the hallways for a Year-End Mini Art Walk? Ms. Marissa is looking for helpers. Volunteer times can be before, during or after school. If you are interested, you can contact Ms. Marissa at marissa@artseed.org
PASSIVE FUNDRAISING
Good news from Campbell’s Labels for Education
Thanks to all our Sherman Sharks and shark fans, Sherman has earned an extra 1,000 points from Campbell’s Labels for Education. We let them know about our holiday hunger drive and the Read Aloud Day. These are both great events that help foster caring for our community and encouraging kids to read and listen to others read. For our efforts, we got some brand new colorful playground balls that Coach Alex requested, as well as much needed art supplies for Marissa. Way to go, everyone!!! Thanks a lot, and keep bringing those labels in. There is now a box for labels and box tops in the office, for everyone’s convenience. Go Sharks!!!
